Posted on 08/14/2023

VALLEJO, CA - On August 12, 2023, at approximately 12:00 P.M., Vallejo Police Department officers responded to a report of a male walking in the neighborhood brandishing what appeared to be an assault rifle at residents in the 100 block of Ladera Dr.

The adult male suspect, identified as Rahul Kumar, refused to exit the residence. Kumar was already wanted for violating multiple felonies prior to this incident and there was a warrant for his arrest.

The Vallejo Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU) was activated, which included personnel from VPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Crisis Negotiation, and Tech teams. Members of ESU established communications with the suspect, but he refused to surrender.

Subsequently, SWAT officers utilized specialized equipment and non-lethal tactics to facilitate the suspect’s safe surrender. After the deployment of less-lethal chemical agents into the residence, the suspect fled out of the back of the residence but was captured by officers before he could escape.

The Vallejo Police Department Detective Division responded and assisted with this investigation. Based on the prior felony wants, speaking with victims and witnesses, Rahul Kumar was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, terroristic threats, cruelty to an animal, grand theft, and brandishing a firearm. Rahul Kumar was subsequently booked into the Solano County Jail.

The Vallejo Police Department would like to thank the members of the community who supported and assisted officers at the scene of the incident. Their contribution and involvement helped officers bring this matter to a safe resolution.
