Investigation Underway After Shots Fired At John Finney Education Complex

VALLEJO - On Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at approximately 9:26 a.m., the Vallejo Police Department (VPD) responded to the report of shots fired in the area of John Finney Education Complex located in the 1300 block of Amador Street. 

Preliminary details indicate that at approximately 9:24 a.m., a suspect entered an empty field on the John Finney Education Complex near the far west end of the campus (adjacent to the railroad tracks) and discharged a firearm. When school staff heard the noise, the administration at John Finney immediately put the school on lockdown at 9:26 a.m. In addition, school authorities immediately contacted the Vallejo Police Department, which arrived on the scene at 9:27 a.m. 

Upon arrival, VPD Officers located evidence of a shooting and searched the area but did not locate the suspect(s) responsible for the shooting. No injuries to students, staff or those neighboring the area have been reported at this time. 

Out of an abundance of caution, school authorities kept the 418 summer school students at John Finney on lockdown. Vallejo High School, which is currently under renovations, is also holding its summer school program at the John Finney Education Complex. Students were released from school at approximately 11:15 a.m.

The VPD is continuing to investigate and have released a description of the suspect: Hispanic male approximately 30-40 years old with a short stocky build (approximately 5’8”), last seen wearing a baseball cap with black puffy jacket, dark jeans and no shoes. The suspect was last seen in the vicinity of the 1300 block of Amador Street. 

Summer school at John Finney Education Complex will continue as scheduled tomorrow, July 21, 2022. The school will have increased site safety officers and Vallejo Police Department presence for the duration of summer school. 

The motive and circumstances involving this incident remain under investigation.
